I'm Mary Lou. I will be the professor of Muse Machine this year. You have received information about me in the mail. My strong intelligence is interpersonal because I love to teach and this is my 36th year. Looking forward to meeting you at Converse College for an action packed week.

I am Krista. I teach at Woodruff Primary School as the Art Teacher. I am just finishing my first year teaching. According to the MI assessment, I am both Visual and Intrapersonal. I love Art and I usually keep to myself. During this course, I expect to have a good time and learn things to carry back with me to the classroom.

Krista, It is great to have a fellow art teacher in the class. Looking forward to meeting you in person.

I'm Chris. I teach theatre in Spartanburg District #7. This may be my 5+ time to take the Muse Machine class. I was in the first class, I don't know how many years ago. I score very highly on the Naturalist MI. I hope we will be going to Flat Rock again, but whatever we do I'll enjoy it and get lots of wonderful ideas to use in my classes.

Hello! My name is Kendra and I am a Speech/Language Pathologist at Woodland Heights Elementary in Spartanburg 6. According to the MI assessment, I have 3 areas of strength: Music, Interpersonal, and Verbal. Very appropriate for a speech therapist, particularly one who is also a youth choir director. I love working with kids and have found incorporating the arts into my speech/language therapy to be very effective. I look forward to this course and discovering new ideas to enhance my therapy through the arts which will be engaging and meaningful for my students.

Chris,You are a wonderful PR person for the course and great participant. Yes, Flat Rock will be mid week with a special backstage tour.

Mary Lou said...

Kendra,I am thrilled to have a person with such a diverse background and from a school that believes the arts are basic in the curriculum.

HI Everyone! I'm Claudia Cornett and I'll be teaching classes during Muse Machine. Of course I'll be focusing on arts-based learning, in general, but my "speciality" is teaching literacy through the arts. We'll be using my book, Creating Meaning through the Arts, during Muse so expect to do some reading and be ready to use your innate creative problem solving skills to put theory into practice.

Mary Lou is a long time friend of mine but she didn't send me the MI survey. Since I've done others before I'm assuming I'll still the same. I'm very Verbal and Visual. I also come out strong on the Intrapersonal and Existential. Hmmm...what's left. Math would not be a strength of mine, especially the kind of math that focuses on right answers. I'm big on a range of appropriate responses to problems--there are few "right" answers in the world I live in!

I'm looking forward to having lots of fun--with a purpose (as Highlights Magazine puts it). I'm delighted to see there are going to be a variety of arts specialists. Let's hope for an equal number of generalists. :*) cc

My name is Twedis and I am a Home Economics teacher at Woodruff Middle School. I am one of the sponsors for the Muse Machine club at my school. I scored highest in the Intrapersonal category which surprised me. My next highest score fell in the Naturalist and Logical categories. I spend a great deal of time working outdoors. I am looking forward to some new experiences that this course will offer.

Mary Lou said...

Claudia, It will be wonderful working with my special friend again and colleague. We are fortunate to have you as a dynamic instructor.

Mary Lou said...

Twedis,I hope that you will share your experience of being the Muse Machine sponsor with the group. See you soon.

The more people that comment, the more excited I get about the course. Its always nice to be around other people that are excited about the arts as much as I am.

I am Sissy Carroll. I am an elementary school art teacher. I have received National Board Certification in EMC/Art. My strongest intelligence is Interpersonal because I love working with all sorts of people.
I am looking forward to the Muse Machine workshop because I am told it is fun, I graduated from Converse, and my daughter lives in Spartanburg!!

Hello! I'm Meghan Goddard and have just completed my fourth year of teaching at Belleview Elementary in Rock Hill, SC. I currently teach 2nd grade inclusion classes-so multiple ways of teaching is essential for my students' success. Existential intelligence is my strongest score, which both surprises and delights me! Verbal and Visual intelligence tied for second place - which does not surprise me at all! I am hoping to leave this course with some fresh and new ideas to bring to my new class in the fall!

Bride2B said...

OOPS! I must already be in "summer vacation mode" because I made a grammatical error in my comment...my apologies:)

Bride2B said...

Chris, I was curious as to what you were referring to when you mentioned going to Flat Rock. I looked it up on the internet and I am assuming you mean the Flat Rock playhouse since you teach theatre?
Looks like a cool place and if I read the schedule right, Cinderella is performing the week of the workshop!!!

Mary Lou said...

Meghan,That's right will be going to the Flat Rock Playhouse for Cinderella and back stage tour. See you soon,ml

I'm Nancy Thompson. I teach 2nd grade at Allendale Elementary In Allendale S.C. This was my 2nd year teaching there. Before that I taught Pre K for 13 years in Augusta, Georgia. I enjoy using various forms of creative art in my classroom and want to learn more ways of intergrating the arts into the regular classroom.

nancy g thompson said...

According to my M.I.I. I am both Interpersonal and intrapersonal personal with a strong tendency toward the naturalistic. This confuses me. How can I score the same on both Interpersonal and intrapersonal?

KE said...

Nancy, I think its neat that you scored high on both Inter and Intra. I think it means that you can work great in large groups and with other people, but you are also very independent minded. Probably a quality in a great leader.

Jennifer Crawford said...

I'm Jenn. I teach at Pleasant View Elementary in Gray Court, SC. We are in the process of moving to a new school so next year we'll be 4K-8th grade in one school! I have been teaching kindergarten for a year and a half and although it's exhausting, I can't see myself doing anything else.

My strong intelligence is musical. I'm not surprised, considering I use music to teach everything in my classroom. I look forward to learning new techniques to take back to my classroom.

Jennifer Crawford said...

Claudia: I'm extremely interested in literacy. In Laurens County our kindergarten kids have to read on a level three to move on the first grade. I look forward to seeing what you have to teach me so I can be a better teacher for my babies!

Mary Lou said...

Nancy g, I agree with krista, It sounds like a great leader to me.

Mary Lou said...

Jen,Claudia has great ideas for you. Prepare for a busy week.

nancy g thompson said...

Claudia,
I found a copy of the 2nd edition of your book in my home library. I won it as a door prize at a workshop. I haven't read any of it yet but i plan to read some of it before the class. I am interested in new ways to integrate the arts using literature. The students that I teach score lowest in literacy skills. Since they are from a rural community there are few opportunities for them to be exposed to the arts without bringing the into the classroom.

My name is Callie. I teach ELA at Busbee Creative Arts Academy- 7th & 8th graders. I just finished up my first year of teaching & I am enjoying summer break! Hello!
My name is Carla and I have been the Choral Director at Woodruff Middle School and Woodruff High School for the past 17 years....I can't believe how time flies! I scored highest on the Musical Intelligence. I also have a degree in Secondary Guidance Counseling, but I found out that I just have to teach music-I love it too much! I always look forward to this class and learning new ideas and techniques to bring to my classroom.

CLB said...

Jenn,
I think it's wonderful how you use music in your classroom. It is a wonderful tool for learning and for disciplining. I have students in my class who don't do well for other teachers or classes, but they do well for me, simply because they love music!

Ava said...

Hi Everybody, I'm Ava and am the Arts Ed. Dir. for The Arts Partnership. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you on June 18th. FYI..I'm mailing out this week details about housing for those of you staying on the Converse campus. So watch for that in your snail mail. The textbooks have arrived and are in my office at The Arts Center. If you are in Spartanburg and want to pick up your book before class, just let me know. We'll bring them to Converse the first day of class.

I can't wait for this great week! You'll be working with my dear friends Mary Lou, Claudia and Don & Tutu Harrell (Orisirisi). Since some of our class sessions will be in dance studios, please bring tennis shoes or socks (no street shoes on those floors).

I'm looking forward to being rejuvenated and inspired by each of you! See you soon. Ava

My name is Tara Nanke. I teach Language Arts at Busbee Creative Arts Academy in Cayce, SC. I have just finished my first year of teaching! My highest score was for the Intrapersonal category. I believe this was accurate of me because I agreed with all of the statements. Having this category as my highest score reflects that I know what I believe. During Muse Machine, I would like to learn new ways to reach my students.

I'm Brenda. I am an art teacher of kindergarten and 1st grade students at Congaree Wood Early Childhood Center in West Columbia. One of my highest scores on the MI Inventory was in the visual area. This describes me because I love visual art and teaching in that area. One of the expectations that I have about the course is that I will learn about and try many new things and will gather new ideas to use in my classroom. I am very interested in literature and literacy and the arts and the use of arts across the curriculum. Also, I am looking forward to meeting everyone!

My name is Amy Henderson, I currently teach 4th grade at Fort Jackson. Although my husband is active duty,we do not live on post, we live in Cayce. My children go to school in Lexington 2 and two of them went to Busbee, so I am looking forward to meeting"Callie", Tara Nanke, and Sarah Jane Gornley since they all teach at Busbee Middle School.

I haven't gotten the MI questions yet, but I predict it will be Intrapersonal with Visual as high areas.Let's see if I'm right!!:)

I'm wanting to take with me a better appreciation of how to incorporate all the things the kids love, along with the standards, and make learning memorable. I'm not strong in the actual "doing" of the Arts, but I try to learn something new in this area every year. I can always appreciate!! :)

I hope to have the opportunity to talk with Jennifer Crawford during the week. I was very interested in her notation about the kindergarteners having to pass a level 3 type test to move on. I used to teach Pre-k and K and I really would like to know what that test consists of and how do parents take it when/if their kids don't pass? See you soon!! :)Amy

Hello, my name is Macie Fitzgerald. I have been a fourth grade teacher at Pinckney Elementary on Ft. Jackson for the past 19 years. I started almost right after graduating from Clemson. I am from Columbia and have lived here my whole life. I did not receive the personality test but know enough about myself to feel I am both interpersonal as well as a visual and auditory learner. I have loved teaching and continue to stay in touch with many of my students even though many of them move away due to their military life. I try to use a lot of visual tools like art projects as well as songs and raps to help teach concepts. Amy Henderson is the other teacher that I coteach with. We do a huge unit on dinosaurs and for thr past 15 years, my students have made large models of their dinosaurs. We take a whole day and build them at school. WE research their Latin names and what they mean. The children have such a good time and really learn a lot. I am looking forward to meeting everyone next week and learning lots of new things to make me a better teacher.

Claudia,
I am very interested in meeting you. Math is a strong suit for me as well. I was an electrical engineering major at Clemson for two years but always wanted to treach elementary school. I actually earned my degree in early childhood which is a long way from the Calculus that I loved. However, math plays a big part in my classroom and I integrate daily problem solving as much as I can all across the curriculum. I look forward to learning what you teach about problem solving techniques in the real world today. As I tell jy students, when you grow up you will not sit at your desk and do math worksheet. You will be expected to take the skills you have learned and apply them to your daily life to solve problems.
A former teacher and mentor of mine, Dr. Harold Vaughn, and I were both trained on Dr. Henry Borenson's Teaching Algebra to kids. It was a very good visually conceptual way to teach how to solve for and unknown or "variable." this is the kind of stuff I love to learn about and use. I look forward to learning all I can.
